Dachshund Dog

Dachshunds have long muzzles, long droopy ears, and tails that run along their backs. They come in two sizes and three coat types, and their coats can be red, black, chocolate, white, gray, spotted, dappled, or have tan markings. 

Dachshunds are known for being brave, affectionate, and vocal. They are also very energetic and have a high tendency to bark and dig. 

Dachshunds originated in Germany as a cross between hounds and terriers, and were originally bred to hunt badgers in their burrows. Their long bodies, short legs, and sharp claws made them ideal for digging and navigating the badgers’ burrows. Once they found a badger, they would bark loudly to alert their hunting partners above ground. 

Dachshunds have specific needs that owners should consider, such as: 

• Grooming: Smooth-coated Dachshunds need weekly brushing with a soft-bristled brush, while longhaired Dachshunds need daily brushing and combing with a stiff-bristled brush. Wirehaired Dachshunds need frequent brushing with a short-napped wire-bristle brush, and should also be “stripped” a couple of times a year. 
• Beds and spinal alignment: Dachshunds’ long bodies benefit from supportive beds and proper spinal alignment when resting.
